
Women’s Basketball Suffers 72-69 Loss to Bryant
Four Blue Devils score in double figures.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell 72-69 to former NEC member Bryant Friday evening in Smithfield, RI.

Amaya Williams scored Central's first points of the game with a triple to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 lead.

Alonna Sellers sank two free throws with 2:34 left to go in the first quarter, but Bryant quickly answered with two free throws of their own from Mia Mancini to extend the Bryant lead to 18-9.

The Bulldogs started the second quarter off hot with a three-pointer from Silvia Gonzalez that extended the Bryant lead to sixteen.

The Blue Devils traded baskets for the next six minutes until Mariona Fortuny converted a layup at the 4:14 mark to give Bryant a 39-21 lead, their largest of the game.

Two free throws from Lanpher cut it to a 13-point game with 1:32 left to play in the second quarter. Sophomore forward Alonna Sellers hit a jump shot with 0:46 left to play and two free throws to close the half trailing 41-30.

Belle Lanpher started the second half with a bucket and Samora Watson drained a triple to start what would be a 29-7 Blue Devil run.

Meghan Kenefick and Alonna Sellers made two buckets in the paint followed by a shifty euro step and lay-in from Lanpher to bring Central within two at the 6:13 mark in the third quarter.

Alonna Sellers tied the game at 46 on a nice backdown and post move to tie the game followed by a bank three ball from Amaya Williams to give Blue Devils their first lead since the 9:09 mark in the first quarter.

An offensive rebound and reverse layup from Meghan Kenefick at the 3:13 mark in the third gave Central a 50-46 lead, their largest of the game.

Mancini drained a triple with 1:24 left to go and a last-second bucket from Kamari Reynolds gave Bryant a 51-50 lead to close out the 3rd quarter.

Bryant Senior Mariona Ortuny drove to the rim for a bucket and the foul to convert a three-point play which gave the Bulldogs a 60-52 lead with 6:30 left to play.

Belle Lanpher drew her third charge to give the Blue Devils the ball with 1:04 left on the clock. Another Bryant foul put Sellers on the line. She knocked down two clutch free throws to bring the score to 68-66 with 53 seconds left to play.

Alonna Sellers and Mia Mancini traded free throws and an Amaya Williams layup brought Central within one with 11.7 seconds left.

A costly CCSU turnover gave the ball back to the Bulldogs with 5.8 seconds left to play. Sellers fouled Alejandra Ferreiros and she made one out of two free throws to give Bryant a 72-69 lead with 4.5 seconds left.

Belle Lanpher took the ball up the court but was unable to convert on a shot in front of the CCSU bench.
