Baseball Holds Off UAlbany for Win in Home-Opener
The Central Connecticut baseball team won its home opener against UAlbany, 7-6, on Tuesday at CCSU Baseball Field. The Blue Devils used a five-run second inning to build its lead and then held off a late Great Danes comeback.
The Blue Devils travel to Kansas State for a three-game series this weekend.

KEY MOMENTS
- UAlbany got two runs in the top of the first inning, but Central got a run back in the bottom of the inning. After a two-out error extended the inning, junior Noah Martinez singled home a run to make it 2-1.
- CCSU loaded the bases in the second with no outs. Sophomore Elliot Good hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game before sophomore Hunter Pasqualini singled to drive in the go-ahead run. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, junior Dan Covino deposited a homerun over the right field fence to make it 6-2.
- After Great Danes got a two-run homerun in the third to make it a 6-4 game Central came back with a run in the fourth. After back-to-back singles to open the inning, Covino singled to left to drive in a run and make it 7-4.
- UAlbany would score a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to make it a one-run game. In the top of the eighth UAlbany would load the bases with one out. After a pitching change, the Great Danes nearly went ahead with a hit down the left field line, but it went just foul and CCSU would work out of the jam. Sophomore Luke Garofalo would get two strikeouts in the ninth to close out the game and pick up his second save.
NOTES
- Covino went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
- Martinez has reached base in 24 consecutive games dating back to last season. He was named NEC Player of the Week following his performance in the season-opening series at Navy.
- Pasqualini set the table for CCSU, going 4-for-5 in the game with a run and RBI.
- CCSU used nine different pitchers in the game. Sophomore Randy Reyes got the win after pitching a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in the second.
