Baseball Drops Sunday Finale to LIU
Central Connecticut dropped the series finale to LIU, 5-2, on Sunday in a Northeast Conference baseball contest at CCSU Baseball Field. After the teams combined for 23 runs on Saturday, pitching took center stage in the final contest of the weekend as the game was scoreless through three innings before the Sharks did all their scoring in the middle innings and limited the Blue Devils to just a pair of one-run innings.
The Blue Devils host Siena on Tuesday.

KEY MOMENTS
- Central had a pair of opportunities to open the scoring in the second and third innings, but came away empty. In the second, CCSU had runners on second and third with two outs before Ryan Neuweiler induced a groundout to end the inning. In the third, the Blue Devils loaded the bases with one out before Neuweiler worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
- LIU managed just one hit in the opening three innings before opening the scoring in the fourth. The Sharks loaded the bases with one out and a bases loaded walk brought home the first run. A single by Colin Adams drove in another run before Bentley Boekhout hit a sac fly to bring in a run and make it 3-0.
- The Sharks tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. After loading the bases with one out, the Sharks got back-to-back RBI-singles from Chris Wasson and Connor Price to make it 5-0.
- Central would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, following three straight walks. The Blue Devils then scored on a muffed ground ball that allowed junior Dan Covino to come home and make it 5-1.
- The Blue Devils would put runners on first and third with one out in the ninth. A wild pitch allowed senior Jay Devito to score and make it 5-2. Josh Gainer retired the next two batters to pick up his third save of the series.
NOTES
- Devito and senior Sam Loda each had two hits for CCSU, but the Blue Devils managed just six as a team.
- Central left 13 runners on base in the game.
- Sophomore Luke Garofalo did not allow a run in 4.2 innings of relief. He alowed just three hits and struck out four.
- The Blue Devils were swept in a three-game NEC series for the first time since April 18-19, 2019, vs. Bryant.
