CCSU Falls to UMass in Season Opener

Central Connecticut women's basketball was defeated by the University of Massachusetts in the season opener on Monday. After a strong showing in the first half, CCSU went into the third quarter tied with the Minutewomen. The Blue Devils battled, but they couldn't hold on and fell to UMass 72-57.

KEY MOMENTS 

  • CCSU came out strong in the first quarter and outrebounded the Minutewomen 12- 5. 

  • Dejah Jenkins ignited the Central offense after hitting the first three-pointer of the game, giving the Blue Devils the 14-13 lead.  

  • Meghan Kenefick gave the Blue Devil's their largest lead of the game (17-15) when she sunk CCSU's second straight three-pointer with an assist from Amaya Williams. 

  • Some nice shooting action by Central left the game tied 19-19 going into the second quarter, with Jenkins and Forever Toppin leading the Blue Devils in scoring with six points each. 

  • The score remained tight throughout the second quarter and Central battled for the lead. Jenkins sunk a bank shot from the lane to give CCSU the 25-24 advantage, before the quarter ended in a 28-28 tie. 

  • The Blue Devils outrebounded the Minutewomen 22-15 in the first half, preventing them from playing fast breaks and controlling the tempo of the game. 

  • UMass hit their stride in the second half of the game. The Minutewomen attacked the basket early in the third quarter, hitting a layup to give them the two-point lead. 

  • CCSU fought to hold on, immediately retaliating with another three from Jenkins, but UMass pulled away, ending the third quarter with a 51-41 lead. 

  • Williams hit a jumper in the beginning of the fourth quarter, attempting to slow UMass' momentum and halting their 6-0 run. 

  • Kenefick finished off the game for the Blue Devils, hitting a jump shot with an assist from Toppin.  

NUMBERS TO KNOW 

17 -  Dejah Jenkins sunk three three-pointers and led CCSU in scoring with 17 points. 

12- CCSU finished with a 38-32 edge in rebounding, including an 11-6 edge on the offensive glass that resulted in a 14-2 advantage in second chance points 

 

NOTES 

  • The starting five for tonight's game featured Toppin, Emma Bruen, Jenkins, Kenefick, and Lara Rohkohl. Jenkins and Kenefick were the most used players in the game, logging 35 and 34 minutes, respectively. 

  • This was the 25th meeting of all-time between the two programs. 

  • Rohkohl, Ally Sentence, and Tatiana Brown all played in their first collegiate game today.

The Blue Devils will be on the road this weekend to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the M&T Bank Arena. The game will take place on Saturday the 12th at 2:00pm.
