Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Stonehill

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to the Stonehill Skyhawks, 73-66, on Monday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, CT. Three Blue Devils scored in double figures including Dejah Jenkins, who led the team with 18 points.

KEY MOMENTS  

  • Belle Lanpher opened the scoring on a second-chance shot. Dejah Jenkins kept the momentum going, sinking a three to give the Blue Devils a five-point lead. 

  • Stonehill scored the next 12 in the 4:15 stretch to take a 12-5 lead.  

  • A Meghan Kenefick three at 3:40 and a conventional three-point play from Lara Rohkohl pulled the Blue Devils back within two, 13-11. 

  • The teams traded layups in the final :17 of the quarter to give the Skyhawks a 22-17 lead at the break. 

  • Stonehill opened 5 of 8 from the floor over the first 3:39 of the second quarter to open a 33-21 advantage to force a Central timeout. 

  • Amaya Williams hit a jumper out of the timeout to make the score 33-23. 

  • Stonehill scored the next 6 and 10 of the next 13 points to take a 43-26 lead with 2:41 to play in the half. 

  • The Blue Devils finished the half with six unanswered points, capped by a Lanpher jumper with 13 seconds remaining. 

  • Rohkohl's block at the buzzer keeps the halftime deficit 43-32. 

  • To start the quarter, a layup from Rohkohl cut the Skyhawk lead down to 9, 43-34. 

  • Over the next five minutes, the deficit remained around 10 until Mia Kelly made two free throws to give Stonehill an 11-point edge, 55-44, with four minutes to play in the quarter. 

  • The Blue Devils went on a 7-2 run, 5 from Jenkins, to close within 6 at the end of the quarter. 

  • The Skyhawks went on a 6-2 run to start the 4th quarter, 63-53 

  • The lead is still 10 after Ward makes a layup at the 3:46 mark. 

  • Jenkins scored 4 straight for the Blue Devils to close within 65-59 with 2:46 to play. 

  • Cierra Pearson went three for three from the free throw line with :36 seconds left to bring the Blue Devils within six, but they could get no closer. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW  

16- CCSU had 16 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points. 

NOTES  

  • Three Blue Devils scored in double figures including Jenkins (18), Rohkohl (13), and Lanpher (12). 

  • CCSU had just nine turnovers in the game and only three in the second half. 

  • Stonehill shot 56.3% in the first half and finished 51.9% from the floor for the game.
