Women's Basketball Defeats Hartford

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated in-state rival, the University of Hartford, 69-55, on Sunday afternoon at Chase Arena in West Hartford, CT. The Blue Devils had four players score in double figures, including Belle Lanpher who led the team with 16 points.

KEY MOMENTS  

  • CCSU was quick to get on the board with a driving layup from Belle Lanpher, but Hartford retaliated with a jumper from Nayeli Dowding to kick off the game. The teams continued to battle for the lead throughout the first quarter. 

  • The Blue Devils were able to build a four-point lead with 1:45 remaining in the first quarter before UHart hit their stride sinking a jumper and two layups. Cierra Pearson made two free throws to tie things up, but Tatum Forbes ended the quarter with a driving layup, giving the Eagles the 19-17 lead. 

  • Central came in hot in the second quarter, going on a 15-5 run. A Meghan Kenefick three-pointer gave CCSU a ten-point lead (38-28), but Hartford fought back, sinking two threes in a row to close the gap.  

  • Pearson hit two more free throws to end the half, sending CCSU into the third quarter with a six-point lead (40-34). 

  • UHart fought to take control in the third, going on an 8-2 run to tie the score. The teams traded points throughout the remainder of the third, ending the quarter at 51-47. 

  • The Blue Devils finished off strong, hitting a 9-0 run to close out the game and beat the Eagles 69-55. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW  

4- Four Blue Devils scored in double figures including Belle Lanpher with 16 points, Meghan Kenefick with 14 points, and Forever Toppin and Lara Rohkohl with 12 points each. 

NOTES  

  • Belle Lanpher led the Blue Devils with 16 points, a new career high. 

  • Hartford also had three players in double figures, led by Nayeli Dowding with 15 points. 

  • CCSU scored 25 points in the second quarter and now have 20 or more points in six quarters this season. 

  • This was the 12th meeting of all time between the two programs, the first being in the 2010-11 season. Today the Blue Devils improved their record to 5-7 against the Eagles.

The Blue Devils will play Boston College on Thursday afternoon at the Conte Forum to close the month. Tipoff is set for 12:00pm.
