Women's Basketball Held Off at Saint Francis Brooklyn

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team battled Saint Francis Brooklyn on Friday night at the ARC in Brooklyn, NY. The Blue Devils fought through four intense quarters but ultimately fell to the Terriers, 65-59.

KEY MOMENTS  

  • The Terriers came in hot going on an 8-0 run to kick off the first quarter. 

  • Forever Toppin hit a driving layup to halt the Terriers' momentum and would go on to score CCSU's first nine points, bringing the Blue Devils within two, 11-9. 

  • Saint Francis attempted to pull away with layups from Sheridan Kavanaugh and Alyssa Fisher, but Dejah Jenkins and Lara Rohkohl retaliated with buckets of their own to keep it a two-point game. 

  • The Terriers went on a short 4-1 run, ending the first quarter with a five-point lead, 19-14. 

  • Both teams were scoreless in the first 2:46 of the second quarter until Rohkohl sunk a pull-up jumper for the Blue Devils. 

  • An Amaya Williams driving layup made it a one-point game before Fisher hit two free throws. 

  • Belle Lanpher evened the score with a three-pointer and the Terriers fought back, going on a 7-0 run. 

  • Central then went on a run of their own with baskets from Meghan Kenefick, Alli Napoli, and Toppin to tie the game once again at 28-28. 

  • Eszter Varga hit two free throws for the Terriers to end the half, giving Saint Francis a two-point lead before halftime. 

  • The Terriers opened the third with 5 points from Fisher. CCSU fought to keep it close, scoring 6 points before Saint Francis went on a 14-5 run, building a 10-point lead, 49-39. 

  • The Blue Devils scored four points to end the quarter at 49-43. 

  • CCSU traded baskets with the Terriers throughout the fourth quarter in an attempt to close the gap.  

  • Rohkohl sunk two shots from the free throw line with 1:42 left to play to get within two, 59-57. 

  • Saint Francis was able to hold off the Blue Devils, going on a 6-2 run before the final buzzer. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW  

22- CCSU had 22 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. 

NOTES  

  • Forever Toppin was the leading scorer for CCSU with 17 points, followed by Rohkohl with 12, and Jenkins with 11. Toppin also tallied three assists, two steals, and two rebounds. 

  • Lara Rohkohl achieved a double-double, leading the team in rebounding with 14 rebounds, 10 being offensive, and scoring 12 points. 

  • Alyssa Fisher scored 29 points for the Terriers, shooting 83.3% from the field. 

  • This game was the 48th Division I meeting between the two teams
