Women's Basketball Falls to Providence

The Central Connecticut women's basketball fell to Providence College, 77-45, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Providence, RI. The Blue Devils were led by Belle Lanpher with 15 points.

KEY MOMENTS  

  • The Friars opened the game with a layup from Olivia Olsen, but the Blue Devils were quick to retaliate with a basket from Forever Toppin. The teams battled for the lead throughout the first quarter until Providence hit their stride, going on a 6-0 run. 

  • Central was able to close the gap with a layup from Toppin and a jumper from Belle Lanpher, bringing the score to 10-8. Olsen sank a jumper with :40 to play, ending the quarter at 12-8. 

  • CCSU came in hot in the second quarter with back-to-back baskets from Lanpher, a jumper and a three-pointer, giving them the 13-12 lead.  

  • The Blue Devils battled to keep the lead until Providence buckled down, going on a 22-3 run, building a 37-22 lead at the half. 

  • Lara Rohkohl scored the first basket of the second half, a layup with the assist from Dejah Jenkins, attempting to regain control of the game. The Friars then went on another big run, 14-2, widening the gap to 25 points. 

  • Lanpher hit two more three-pointers before Providence scored the final five points of the period. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW  

15- Belle Lanpher sunk three three-pointers, tying her career best, to lead the Blue Devils with 15 points. 

NOTES  

  • Belle Lanpher led the Blue Devils with 15 points, hitting three three-pointers. 

  • Williams also scored in double digits, finishing with 10 points, matching her career high. 

  • Providence also had five players in double figures, led by Janai Crooms with 16 points. 

  • This was the second meeting of all time between the two programs, the first being in the 2007-08 season. Today the Friars improved their record to 2-0 against the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will play Hartford University next Sunday afternoon at Chase Arena. Tipoff is set for 2:00pm.
