Women's Basketball Defeats SFU to Secure First Conference Victory of the Season

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated Saint Francis University, 60-64 on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils were trailing 35-24 at the half before kicking it into gear and securing their first conference victory of the season.

RECORDS: CCSU (4-10, 1-2 NEC), SFU (2-13, 1-2 NEC)

KEY MOMENTS  

  • CCSU worked to build an early 6-2 lead with buckets from Lara Rohkohl and Forever Toppin. 

  • The Blue Devils and the Red Flash then traded baskets for the remainder of Q1 before Saint Francis took off on a 10-1 run, giving them the 16-9 lead. 

  • Central worked to close the gap throughout the second quarter, trimming SFU's lead to five, 23-18, with free throws from Dejah Jenkins. 

  • Saint Francis retaliated by sinking eight free throws and a layup to build an 11-point lead, 35-24, going into the half.  

  • The Blue Devils began to build momentum at the start of the third with back-to-back threes from Jenkins. 

  • Central hit their stride and chipped away at the Red Flash's lead. Jenkins tied up the game (44-44) with 2:11 remaining in the quarter by hitting two free throws. 

  • The teams ended the third tied at 47-47, with CCSU having shot 58.3% from the floor, securing 23 points. 

  • SFU battled to take back control of the game in the fourth and tied things up 54-54 with a layup from Aaliyah Moore. 

  • The Blue Devils fought back with yet another Jenkins three and a Lanpher jumper. 

  • The Red Flash were able to even the score for a final time (59-59) with :55 remaining when Semaya Turner sunk a shot from behind the arc. 

  • CCSU was able to secure the win with a layup from Lanpher and free throws from Jenkins and Toppin. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW  

19- Dejah Jenkins led the Blue Devils in scoring with 19 points. This is a new career high for Jenkins and she has now scored in double figures in nine out of 14 games played this season. 

NOTES  

  • Jenkins led the Blue Devils with 19 points and tallied three steals, three rebounds, and one assist. 

  • Belle Lanpher also scored in double-figures, securing 14 points as well as three assists and two rebounds. 

  • Meghan Kenefick led the Blue Devils on the boards with 10 rebounds. 

  • Central scored 23 points in the 3rd quarter and now have 20 or more points in seven quarters this season. 

  • With today's win, CCSU snagged their first conference victory of the season and improved their all-time record against Saint Francis University to 15-36.
