
Baseball Drops NEC Opener at LIU on Saturday
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell at LIU, 9-8, on Saturday in the Northeast Conference opener for both schools. The Blue Devils tied the game with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, before the Sharks scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

KEY MOMENTS
- Central opened the scoring in the second inning after walks to Bo Yaworski and Colby Brouillette put a pair of runners on base. With two outs, Matt Falk tripled to right to clear the bases and make it 2-0.
- CCSU added a run with two outs in the third in inning. Jackson Haker doubled and scored on the next batter when Yaworski singled to left and made it 3-0.
- LIU would erupt for a six-run third inning to take the lead. A three-run homerun by Jack Power would make it 5-3 before a single by Mason Breton pushed across another run.
- The Sharks pushed across two more runs in the fourth. A single by Benjamin Fierenzie plated the first run and a bases loaded walk to Joseph Durso made it 8-3.
- CCSU loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning and Gabe Pitts delivered a triple to clear the bases and make it 8-6. In the sixth inning, Gianno Merlonghi led off with a double before scoring on a triple by Haker. Yaworski would hit a sac fly to score Haker and tie the game, 8-8.
- The Blue Devils would get two runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but LIU managed to avoid any damage. In the bottom of the ninth, Power hit a one-out homerun to right field to win the game.
NOTES
- CCSU banged out 17 hits in the game, including six extra-base hits.
- Brouilette went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs.
- Brady Short added three base hits.
- Haker, Yaworski, Falk and Aidan Redahan each had two hits. Yaworski and Falk had two RBIs each.
