Athletics To Share Morgan's Message During 2024-25 Season
First-event is Sunday men's soccer game.
The Central Connecticut State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced the fall slate of Morgan's Message games for the Blue Devils.
Morgan's Message® is a 501(c)(3) that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. The aim is to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone.
Abby Meehan is a senior on the Blue Devils softball team, and one of the SAAC Mental Health & Community Service chairs. She is one of the driving forces behind the commitment to Morgan's Message on campus this season.
"I really believe in the 'We Get To' mantra," said Meehan. "I lost a friend in college to cancer who didn't get to play collegiate soccer. And since then, I have wanted to do something good and spread positivity, and Morgan's Message does that."
At Morgan's Message games on campus this fall, and winter and spring sports will participate as well, fans can expect to find Blue Devil student-athletes with information, brochures and fliers from Morgan's Message. Contributions will also be accepted to help further the mission of Morgan's Message.
"I hope that people will leave our games knowing more about Morgan's Message," Meehan said. "I love what Morgan's Message stands for and the difference it is making on campus around the country. And I hope that everyone who comes to our games leaves with that same feeling."
Mental health has been at the forefront of college athletics for many years, and Blue Devil teams have taken part in Morgan's Message events over the past several years. This year, CCSU SAAC has made Morgan's Message a year-long initiative for the Blue Devils. Each sport is schedule to hold a game that will publicize the mission of Morgan's Message, and help 'Break The Stigma'.
Molly McCarthy, the CCSU SAAC Advisor and Assistant Director of Athletics, spearheads the mental health efforts for the Department of Athletics.
"As a mental health professional, I understand the importance of talking," said McCarthy. "I'm thankful that our student-athletes understand the importance of mental health and are working together to break the stigma!"
