Baseball Earns Sunday Split
Blue Devils will travel to UMass on Tuesday afternoon
The Central Connecticut baseball team earned a split of a Sunday doubleheader by virtue of a 3-1 win in the second game. Central lost the first game 2-1. The split moves Central to 15-15 overall and 8-8 in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers are 14-16 overall and 11-5 in the league.
In game one Sacred Heart struck first for the third straight game, plating a single run in the second inning to lead 1-0.
The second run of the game pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. An RBI single from Dave Boisture gave the Pioneers the two-run lead.
The Blue Devils cut the lead in half in the sixth inning. With one out junior Dylan DelaCruz tripled off the wall, and then scored on an RBI groundout from senior Nick Palmisano.
Sophomore lefty Cody Brown dropped to 3-4 on the season with the loss. He pitched all seven innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs.
The Blue Devils struck first in game two taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. DelaCruz led off the fourth with a single, went to second on a sacrifice and then scored on a double from classmate J.P. Sportman. Sportman scored on a two-run home run from senior Tyler McIntyre.
The Pioneers got one back in the fifth, cutting the lead to 3-1 on an RBI groundout. Central sophomore starter Dominic Severino got out of trouble and kept the lead at two with a strikeout to end the threat.
Severino went five innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out three. Junior Josh Ingham earned his sixth save of the season, pitching the final two innings and allowing just one baserunner. Sophomore Brendyn Karinchak also pitched two innings without allowing a run.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Tuesday night on the road at UMass beginning at 3 p.m. Next weekend they travel for a weekend NEC series at Wagner beginning on Friday.
