Baseball Wins at Villanova
Blue Devils Now 4-3 Overall on the Season
The Central Connecticut baseball team went on the road to defeat Villanova on Sunday, topping the Wildcats 6-4 in Philadelphia. Senior Tyler McIntyre and junior J.P. Sportman each drove in two runs in the win.
Central returns to action at home on Tuesday hosting UConn at 3 p.m. on the CCSU Baseball Field.
Villanova struck first with a single run in the bottom of the second inning off of Blue Devil starter Nick Neumann.
The Blue Devils answered with two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice fly from McIntyre scored the first run, and an RBI single from sophomore Ryan Beal plated the second.
Villanova answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. They added another in the fifth inning to lead 4-2.
A three-run seventh inning gave the Blue Devils back the lead, 5-4. Sportman sent home two runs with a double with the bases loaded. McIntyre added his second RBI of the game on a fielder's choice to give the Blue Devils back the lead.
Neumann pitched the first five innings for the Blue Devils allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three. Junior Nick Boyd pitched one inning of relief and struck out one while allowing one hit. He earned his first win of the season.
Central added a run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single from sophomore Dominic Severino, making it 6-4. Sportman scored on the play.
Sophomore lefty Brendyn Karinchak pitched 2.1 innings in relief allowing just one hit while striking out two batters. Junior Josh Ingham picked up his second save of the season pitching the last .2 innings and retiring both batters on just four pitches.
Ingham also added two hits in the victory. Sportman and McIntyre each had two hits and two RBI. Severino and Beal added a hit each and an RBI in the game.
The Blue Devils will open the home portion of their schedule this Tuesday hosting UConn at 3 p.m.
