Baseball Splits on Saturday at Navy
Teams will complete weekend series on Sunday
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Navy on Saturday, dropping the first game 3-2 before rebounding to win the second 4-2. Sophomore lefty Cody Brown pitched a complete game in game two to earn his first victory of the season.
Central is now 2-1 on the season with the split. The two teams will complete the weekend series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game.
In the first game Navy scored two in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, but Central bounced back with runs in the fifth and sixth to score the score.
In the fifth, sophomore Ryan Beal singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a single from freshman Connor Fitzsimons. He scored on a fielder's choice from junior Anthony Turgeon to make it 2-1.
In the sixth inning junuior J.P. Sportman led off the inning with a single and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Midshipmen. He scored on an RBI groundout from senior Tyler McIntyre to tie the game.
Navy scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the 3-2 win.
Tom Coughlin pitched five innings for the Blue Devils and struck out one while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Junior Nick Boyd pitched the final 1.2 innings and was hit with the loss, he is 0-1 on the season. He struck out one and walked three while allowing one hit.
Game two saw Navy take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Central scored three in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
In the second junior Dylan DelaCruz led off the inning with a single and went to second on a single from McIntyre. With runners on second and third senior Chris Renzoni singled in DelaCruz to tie the game 1-1. A two-run triple from senior Mike Washburn made it 3-1.
The Blue Devils added a run in the top of the third to make it 4-1. McIntyre drove in his fifth run of the weekend, scoring DelaCruz who had tripled with one out. Navy scored in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2.
Brown pitched the complete game to earn the victory, he is now 1-0 on the season. He struck out four and allowed only six hits and two earned runs. He did not walk a batter.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Sunday.
