Former Central Connecticut women's soccer player Roma McLaughlin has signed an 18-month professional contract with Danish outfit Fortuna Hjørring.
"I'm absolutely delighted to see Roma fulfill her dream by signing to play professional soccer at one of Europe's traditional great clubs, Fortuna," said CCSU head coach Mick D'Arcy. "She is a top player and we are all very proud of her at CCSU."
McLaughlin was named to United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's Players to Watch list and the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list prior to the start of the 2022 season. She was also named First Team All-NEC and NEC Midfielder of the Year, making her the third NEC student-athlete in history to win a women's soccer major award in four consecutive seasons. She also earned All-Region honors for the fourth time and received an invitation to the 2022 New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Division I Senior Bowl to cap off her career with the Blue Devils. McLaughlin was also CCSU's first two-time All-American and helped the Blue Devils to five straight NEC regular season titles. A five-time All-NEC First Team selection, she finished her career with 28 goals and 13 assists for 69 points in 74 career games.
"The experience of becoming a professional soccer player has been exciting and I am looking forward to the future in this new role," said McLaughlin "I will miss Central but I am forever grateful to the CCSU community and all it has done for me during my time there."
McLaughlin has been capped by Ireland, making her first appearance in 2016 and was part of the squad in October that secured the nation's first appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup to be held this summer.
Fortuna Hjørring are currently in third place in the Danish top flight, the Kvindeligaen. One of the top clubs in Denmark, Fortuna has won 11 Danish League titles and nine Danish Cup crowns. The club also finished as runner-up at the UEFA Women's Cup in 2003.
