Women's Soccer Ties SHU, Clinching Top-Seed and Share of Regular Season Crown

The Central Connecticut women's soccer team tied SHU 1-1 on Sunday afternoon. The result secures at least a share of the Northeast Conference regular season title, regardless of the outcomes of Thursday's season finales. The result also secures the top-seed for the Blue Devils in the upcoming NEC Tournament, beginning November 3 with the semifinals.

Score: CCSU 1, SHU 1

Records: CCSU (8-5-2, 6-0-2 NEC), SHU (9-5-4, 5-1-3 NEC)

Location: Park Avenue Field (Fairfield, CT)

"We had a slow start in the first half and never really got into the flow. We picked it up in the second half and I thought we played better. Overall, we are happy with the point since it gives us at least a share of the regular season title"- CCSU Head Coach Mick D'Arcy

  • The Pioneers took the lead with one minute remaining in the first half when they were awarded a free kick. Nicole Green faked the kick, allowing Kelly Medeiros to launch a shot toward the top left corner of the goal and into the back of the net.

  • The Blue Devils aggressively came into the second half, firing off two shots in the first minute, one by Giavanna Inzerillo (blocked) and one by Kelly Brady (off target). Aoife Horgan had a dangerous chance to score in the 49th minute when McLaughlin sent her a through pass up the field. Horgan dribbled toward the goal and fired off a shot which was saved by SHU goalkeeper, Elyssa Kipperman.

  • Central tied things up in the second half, when in the 57th minute, SHU committed a foul in the box, resulting in a CCSU penalty kick. Roma McLaughlin took the kick, firing the ball past Kipperman and into the right corner of the goal.

  • CCSU tried to take the lead in the 77th minute when Zoe McGlynn passed the ball to the middle of the field to Inzerillo. Inzerillo took a shot from just outside the box, but Kipperman smothered the attempt.

9- The tie stretched the Blue Devils unbeaten streak against SHU to nine, 8-0-1, dating back to the 2016 season

  • The Blue Devils and the Pioneers have played to six draws since 2002

  • Central outshot the Pioneers 13-9 with six shots on goal.

  • With this tie, CCSU cliches a bye into the semifinals of the NEC Tournament.

The Blue Devils will face Saint Francis University for Senior Day on Thursday, October 27th at 2:00 at the CCSU Soccer Field. This will be Central's final game before the NEC Tournament.
