CCSU Tops SFU to Secure Fifth Straight NEC Regular Season Title

The CCSU women's soccer team faced off against Saint Francis University today at the CCSU Soccer Field, concluding regular season play. They beat the Red Flash 2-0, securing the regular season championship for the fifth year in a row. The Blue Devils honored their class of seven seniors prior to the contest.

Records: CCSU (9-5-2, 7-0-2 NEC), SFU (7-9-1, 5-3-1 NEC)

KEY MOMENTS 

  • Horgan tallied what would prove to be the game-winner 25 minutes into the game, with a strong individual effort, juking a pair of defenders at the top of the 18 and sliding her shot between the post and goalkeeper. 

  • Horgan assisted on the insurance goal, taking a misplayed ball to the end line and passing it across to the foot of Kristina Kelly on the opposite post for the tally. 

  • Seniors Megan Keleher and Caitlin Murphy minded the net for a half each, combining on the shutout with two saves apiece. 

  • Keleher kept it level in the final minutes of the first half, knocking down a long-range shot by Lauren Pyle. 

NOTES  

  • The Blue Devils have defeated the Red Flash in their last five matchups and now have an overall record of 16-10-4 against Saint Francis Brooklyn. 

  • CCSU outshot SFU 9-7 with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. 

  • Central recognized seniors Caitlin Murphy, Ashley Wright, Celia Debrocke, Giavanna Inzerillo, Kacey Rolfe, Sydney Dorman, and Megan Keleher before the game. 

  • With today's win, CCSU secured their fifth straight NEC regular season title, sixth in seven years and 12th of all-time. 

 

UP NEXT  

The Blue Devils will play their first game in the NEC Tournament on November 3rd at 1:00pm. The game will take place at the CCSU Soccer Field and will be held against the lowest remaining seed after the quarterfinal games on Sunday.
