Women's Track & Field 7th at NECs
Junior Shelby Tuttle scored in three events for the Blue Devils.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team finished the Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday in seventh place out of 12 in West Long Branch, NJ. The Blue Devils earned seven top-five performances over the weekend including the silver medal earned by sophomore Ronea Saunders on Saturday in the high jump and another on Sunday by junior Elizabeth Eberhardt.
Eberhardt claimed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with her ECAC qualifying time of 10:39.34 for eight team points of the Blue Devils' 55.
In addition to her impressive individual performance on Saturday, Saunders helped both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to top-four finishes. The 4x100m team, consisting of Saunders, senior Rachel Dombroski, junior Cassey Griffith and freshman Alyssa Gonzalez, crossed the finish line in 48.52 for fourth place and five team points.
The 4x400m relay squad earned a bronze medal and was led by junior Shelby Tuttle, who earned the fastest split time. The team, consisting of Saunders, Tuttle, Dombroski and sophomore Chantelle Deer, qualified for ECAC competition with its time of 3:51.75 and earned six team points.
Tuttle also performed well in the hurdle events. She came in fourth for five points in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.57. She also broke her personal-best time in the 400m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:03.52 for sixth place and three points.
Freshman Chelse Terry, who placed fourth in the discus throw on Saturday, earned a new personal record in the shot put, registering a distance of 11.83 meters. She placed 13th in a field of 25.
In the 5,000 meter run, CCSU record holder Krisztina Dearborn completed the race in 17:33.39 for sixth place and three points. Dearborn added to her third place, ECAC-qualifying performance in the 10,000m on Saturday, an event in which she also holds the CCSU record.
Monmouth claimed the NEC Champion title for the fifth-consecutive season with 218 points. Saint Francis (PA) came in second with 86, followed by Sacred Heart (83). LIU Brooklyn (76) and Robert Morris (69) rounded out the top five.
The Blue Devils will return to action May 10-12 at the New England Outdoor Championships and the IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Championships.
