Saunders Takes Two at Yale Invitational
Sophomore Ronea Saunders placed in two events while junior Shelby Tuttle broke another CCSU record.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the Yale Invitational on Saturday in New Haven, CT. The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Ronea Saunders who placed first in the long jump (5.36m) and in the high jump (1.70m).
Junior Shelby Tuttle also turned in an impressive performance for Central. For the second consecutive meet, only her second as a Blue Devil, Tuttle broke the CCSU record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.91. Last week, Tuttle ran a 9.22 at the Army Crowell Open to make her first mark on the Central record book. Tuttle also placed sixth in the triple jump to earn her second of CCSU's 11 top-10 finishes.
In the high jump, Saunders was followed by senior Ahj Meeks, who came in sixth clearing 1.55 meters. Classmate Rachel Dombroski set a new collegiate personal-best in the 60 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 8.17 seconds for seventh place.
In addition to the Blue Devils' success in the individual events, Central also achieved three top-10 spots in relay events alone. Central took gold in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:59.49, and earned third in the 4x800 meter relay, crossing the finish line in 10:09.59. CCSU also took seventh in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:09.07.
Other key performances for the Blue Devils included freshman Chelse Terry, who placed 10th in the weight throw (12.33m) and sophomore Chantelle Deer, who also finished 10th in the 400 meter dash (1:00.53).
