Women's Track Kicks Off 2013 at Army
Junior Krisztina Dearborn and sophomore Ronea Saunders take first place.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team earned nine top-five performances at the Army Crowell Open on Saturday in West Point, NY. The 2012 NEC Most Outstanding Rookie Ronea Saunders led the Blue Devils. She took first in the high jump clearing 1.73 meters, tying her 2012 ECAC qualifying mark.
Saunders also ran in the 4x400 meter relay event. The team placed second with a time of 4:06.11 and consisted of senior Rachel Dombroski, junior Shelby Tuttle and sophomore Chantelle Deer.
Tuttle, a newcomer to the Blue Devil squad, broke the CCSU school record in the 60 meter hurdles event with a time of 9.22. She surpassed the previous record of 9.30 set in 2005.
Junior Krisztina Dearborn bested her own collegiate record by nearly five seconds in the one mile run for first place. She earned the victory over 20 competitors, crossing the finish line in 5:20.15.
Fellow junior and distance runner Elizabeth Eberhardt took second in the 1,000 meter run in a time of 3:07.17. Central also claimed third in the race when freshman Ally Gates crossed the finish line behind Eberhardt with a time of 3:16.48. Sophomore Taylor LePage placed fifth with a 3:28.16 performance.
Central racked up the top-five finishes including Deer's third place performance in the 500 meter dash (1:20.08) and junior Meghan Burn's fifth place in the 400 meter dash (1:04.21).
CCSU totaled 16 top-10 finishes on the day and earned spots in the top 10 in nine of 12 events at the Army Crowell Open. Saturday's competition consisted of nearly 20 schools and hundreds of entrants.
