Women's Track & Field Third at AIC
Junior Shelby Tuttle earned silver in both the 100 and 400 meter hurdle events contributing to the Blue Devils' 12 top-five places.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team earned third place out of 16 at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday in Springfield, MA. The Blue Devils earned 12 top-five finishes on the day including a silver performance from junior Shelby Tuttle in both the 100 and 400 meter hurdle events.
Tuttle ran a 14.55 in the 100m hurdles and was followed by senior Dara Edge who placed fifth out of 25 with a time of 15.80. In the 400m hurdles, Tuttle crossed the finish line in 1:06.01, earning eight points for the Blue Devils. She was followed by freshman Jenean McCalla who finished in 1:13.46 for 10th place.
In the 800 meter run, sophomore Taylor LePage claimed the bronze with a collegiate personal-best time of 2:22.11. Junior Elizabeth Eberhardt placed sixth out of 43 in the event, crossing the finish line in 2:23.23.
Eberhardt also placed fifth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:45.89. She was followed by classmate Krisztina Dearborn who topped her previous personal-best by just less than 10 seconds. She crossed the finish line in 4:48.36.
In the 200 meter dash, junior Cassey Griffith claimed fifth place with a time of 26.36. She was followed by sophomore Alessandra Salmon who crossed the finish line in 27.68 for 15th. Salmon also placed 15th in the 400 meter dash.
The Blue Devils earned the bronze in the 4x100 meter relay event with a time of 50.25 and in the 5,000m, sophomore Shannon McBride earned a new personal-best with her time of 18:40.22. Also placing in the top-10 in the event was freshman Caylee Richardson (18:41.34).
Central claimed five top-five finishes in the field events, alone. Senior Ahj Meeks claimed the gold in the high jump, clearing 1.52 meters, and was followed by freshman Erin Howe who also jumped 1.52 meters.
Meeks also placed fourth in the triple jump with a 10.58 meter mark. Howe placed eighth in the event with a personal-best 9.72 meters.
Freshman Chelse Terry took silver in the discus throw, registering 38.43 meters, notching a new personal-best. She also placed fifth in the hammer throw event with a distance of 39.40 meters.
Other notable performances for the Blue Devils included sophomore Ronea Saunders who placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.12 meters and freshman Ally Gates who ran the 1,500m in 5:06.76 for 21st out of 54.
UMass Amherst claimed first in meet with 213 points. American International took second with 89 followed by Central Connecticut with 82. Saint Rose (61) and Wesleyan (55) rounded out the top five.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday, April 13, at both the UMASS Invitational in Amherst, MA and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, PA.
