Saunders: NEC Field Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Ronea Saunders cleared 1.72 meters (5' 7.75") to claim the high jump gold in the 18th Annual Monmouth Season Opener last weekend.
Central Connecticut sophomore Ronea Saunders earned the first NEC Field Athlete of the Week award for the 2013 outdoor track and field season, the league announced Tuesday. The defending NEC high jump champion opened her sophomore season by leaping to another victory.
Saunders cleared 1.72m (5' 7.75") to finish atop the field at the Monmouth Season Opener. The height immediately catapulted Saunders into first place on the league leader board, while qualifying the two-time NEC champ for the ECAC Championships. The mark would have been good enough for second place at the 2012 NEC Outdoor Championships where Saunders took gold and set the meet record with a 1.75m (5' 8.75") bound.
Saunders earned two NEC Field Athlete of the Week awards during the 2013 indoor season. She holds both the CCSU indoor and outdoor high jump records and has earned two NEC Individual Champion titles.
The Blue Devils return to action this Saturday, April 6, at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, MA.
