
Softball Earns 9-6 Comback Win To Sweep Wagner Series
Down 5-0, CCSU Scores Eight Times In The Bottom Of The Fourth
Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom the fourth inning, the Central Connecticut State softball team bounced back with an eight-run outburst, their biggest single-scoring inning so far during 2025, on their way to a 9-6 win over the visiting Wagner College Seahawks on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon in the Hardware City. The win gives the Blue Devils a three-game series sweep over the weekend and ups the team's season record to 10-15 overall, and CCSU is now 5-1 in Northeast Conference play. The victory also raises the Blue Devils' win streak to four, and the squad has also won eight of its last 10 outings. Wagner slips to 8-14 overall and an even 3-3 in conference play.

KEY MOMENTS FROM SUNDAY'S COMEBACK VICTORY:
- Wagner raced out to a 5-0 lead on Sunday scoring one run in the first inning; followed by two runs in both the third and fourth frames.
- CSSU put three base runners on to open the eventful bottom of the fourth inning when Reagan Vunak reached on an error, Kassandra (KC) Machado singled and Skylar Warn was hit by pitch and all three of those runner would score when the next three batters drew bases loaded walks, as Grace Lawton, Ava Cino and Sophia LoPiccolo all earned RBI free passes.
- After the next two Blue Devils were retired, Ashley Viesta had the biggest hit of the eight-run inning when she cleared the bases with a clutch, two-out, three-RBI double to give CCSU a 6-5 lead which it never relinquished.
- After Viesta's bases-clearing base knock, Reagan Vunak and Kassandra (KC) Machado, batting for the second time in the inning, each added RBI-doubles to increase the Central advantage to 8-5.
- The visiting Seahawks' scored a run in the top of the six to cut the CCSU lead to two at 8-6, but Ava Cino would give her team some insurance with an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth, her second run batted in of the day, to make the score 9-6.
- As a team, the Blue Devils had 10 hits on the frigid afternoon led by Grace Lawton, who went 3-for-3 at the plate and reached base in all appearance at the dish as she also drew a walk. Kassandra (KC) Machado also had a multi-hit game for the winners with two hits.
- Liz Hamilton earned the win in relief of starter Alina Varga in the pitching circle to raise her season record to 5-3. Hamilton worked 4.1 innings out the bullpen in which she allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
NOTES:
- With Sunday's triumph, the Blue Devils are now 9-6 at home so far this season, and CCSU has posted nine straight wins over Wagner.
- The nine runs scored on Sunday tie a single-game season-high for Central so far in 2025.

- The Blue Devils will look to run their winning streak to five on Wednesday when they head just a bit south of New Britain to take on in-state rival Fairfield University in a non-conference single game. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
