
Blue Devils Blank Wagner Twice In Saturday Softball Sweep
Alina Varga And Liz Hamilton Whitewash The Seahawks In Back-To-Back Games
Pitching ruled the day on Saturday, as the CCSU softball team blanked the visiting Wagner College Seahawks twice, 7-0 in game one and 5-0 in the nightcap, to sweep a Northeast Conference doubleheader in New Britain. With the two wins, the Blue Devils, winners of three game in a row, are now 9-15 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Wagner is now 8-13 overall and 3-2 in the NEC. Alina Varga fired a two-hit complete game shutout in the opener, and not to be outdone, Liz Hamilton pitched a three-hit complete game whitewash of the Seahawks in game two. CCSU's Ava Cino homered in both games on Saturday.

KEY MOMENTS FROM SATURDAY'S GAME ONE VICTORY:
- CCSU capitalized on two Wagner errors in the bottom of the first inning to push across a run on an RBI ground out by Kassandra (KC) Machado.
- The Blue Devils extended their advantage to 2-0 in the second inning when Ava Cino crushed a solo home run to left centerfield; her first homer of the 2025 season.
- The score would stay a 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Central broke loose scoring five runs with two outs in the frame on a 2-RBI single to left by Grace Lawton and then a 3-RBI, bases-clearing double to center by Ashley Viesta.
- Viesta went 2-for-4 at the plate in game one.
- Alina Varga starred again in the pitching circle for the Blue Devils, picking up her fourth straight win as a starter to raise her season record to 5-6. Varga fired her team's first shutout of the season in Saturday's opener going the distance allowing only two hits; while striking out seven and working around six walks.
KEY MOMENTS FROM SATURDAY'S GAME TWO SHUTOUT:
- Grace Lawton gave CCSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of third inning with an RBI-single for her third run batted in of the doubleheader.
- Ava Cino then connected on her second home run in as many games, blasting a two-run shot this time, to increase the Blue Devils' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Central would add two more tallies in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-0 in favor of the home team, when Reagan Vunak came through with a 2-RBI single.
- As a team, CCSU would bang out nine hits in the nightcap led by a 3-for-4 performance at the dish by Jazmin Lasane. Two of Lasane's hits were doubles.
- In the pitching circle in game two, Liz Hamilton would not allow a base hit until a bloop single to centerfield spoiled her no-hit bid with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Liz would allow only three hits in working a complete game shutout in the nightcap to raise her season record to 4-3. In her seven innings of work, she struck out four Wagner batters and issued only one base on balls.
NOTES:
- With Saturday's two wins, the Blue Devils are now 8-6 at home so far during the 2025 campaign.
