KEY MOMENTS
- The teams combined for 14 runs in the opening two innings. After the Stags scored two in the top of the first, CCSU came back with five runs in the bottom of the first. Joe Rios hit a two-run homer to left and Josh Taylor followed two batters later with a two-run shot of his own. With two outs, Nicol hit the third longball of the inning to make it 5-2.
- Fairfield would score four runs with two outs in the top of the second to regain a short-lived lead. The first four Blue Devils reached base safely in the bottom of the inning. Mike Torniero would knock an RBI single to tie the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Josh Taylor was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and with the bases loaded and two out Nicol would draw a walk to bring in a run and make it 8-6.
- The teams traded runs in the fifth with CCSU's coming via a homerun to straightaway center off the bat of Nicol to make it 9-7.
- The Blue Devils broke the game open in the sixth with six runs. Nicol drove in a pair of runs with a bases loaded single. Brady Short was hit by a pitch with the bases full to bring in a run before Hunter Pasqualini followed with a two-run single. Short would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 15-8.
- Dan Hussey hit a solo homerun to right in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead to 16-9.
- Fairfield would score three runs in the top of the ninth with one out, but Nic Benhardt would get a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils have won the last two meetings against Fairfield.
- CCSU scored a season-high 16 runs and had its sixth game with 10 or more hits.
- Nicol finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored.
- Rios had three hits and two RBIs. He has a seven-game hitting streak, including two or more hits in three straight games.
- The CCSU defense did not commit an error for the second straight game and have committed just one miscue in the field over the past four games.
