Volleyball Falls, Cochran Gets Kill 1,000
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to Long Island in three sets on Sunday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team dropped their final game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon. The three set loss at the hands of Long Island assures the Blackbirds a share of the Northeast Conference Regular Season Title. For the Blue Devils, the loss drops their overall record to 20-10 on the season, but their 11-5 record in NEC play will earn them a trip to the conference tournament.
Junior Emily Cochran notched her 1,000th career kill in the second set of the match. She finished the day with a team-high 16 kills, bringing her career total to 1,010 at the end of today's action. With another strong season in 2012, Cochran could move into the top-three on the Blue Devils all-time list.
The Blue Devils lost the opening set 25-17 before forcing extra points in a 27-25 second set loss. In the third set Central came from behind to take a 19-17 lead, but the Blackbirds closed the game on an 8-3 run for the victory.
Cochran was the only Blue Devil with double-digit kills in the match. Classmate Blaike King recorded nine kills and a team-high .231 hitting percentage on the day.
At the net, juniors Jamie Rademacher and Jennifer Waddill each contributed to three blocks and freshman Emma Le Maitre teamed up with senior Danielle Gasser on another pair. Gasser also had a team-high 12 digs and 31 assists.
Gasser's 1,211 assists this season tie her with Chris Stuart for the 4th highest season total in program history.
The Blue Devils and Blackbirds are both assured of a spot in the NEC Tournament, but both teams must wait for the conclusion of the Robert Morris- Sacred Heart game to determine the host site and final seeding.
