Nesmith Leads Women's Track at Monmouth
Sierra Nesmith won two events on Saturday at the 24th Annual Season Opener at Monmouth
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team won four events at the 24th Annual Season Opener at Monmouth University on Saturday. Senior Sierra Nesmith won the gold in the 200 and 400 meter dash events with times of 25.69 and 56.79 seconds. Junior Megan Brawner won the 1,500 meter run finishing with a time of 4:44.84. The women's 4x800 team consisting of sophomore Angie Rafter, Brawner, freshman Ashley Dana, and junior Kailyn Accetura, won the race in 9:57.26.
Freshman Edwina Lorient represented the Blue Devils in the 100 meter dash finishing with a time of 14.31 seconds.
Three other members of the track team competed with Nesmith in the 200 meter dash. Junior Taylor Davis came in 16th place with a time of 27.05. senior McKenna Kilian completed the event in 27.25 for a 25th place finish. Freshmen Samantha Vasquez and Kelly Hurd crossed the finish line at 28.35 and 28.71 seconds respectively.
In the 400 meter dash, Kilian came in after Nesmith in 15th place with a time of 1:00.72. Vasquez completed the race in 1:04.05 seconds and Davis finished in 1:04.30. Freshman Emily Appleton also ran finishing with a time of 1:11.00.
Rafter finished less than a second after Brawner in the 1,500 meter run at 4:45.15 for second place. Dana came in seventh with a time of 4:54.98.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stevens and senior Morgan Ricci ran the women's 5,000 meter race finishing with times of 19:23.87 and 20:08.11 respectively.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team (Hurd, Davis, Vasquez, Snape, and Benjamin) earned an 11th place finish after completing the race in 4:18.50.
In the field events, junior Kadizha Benjamin leaped 1.50 meters in the high jump for a 13th place finish. Kilian came in 14th in the long jump with a leap of 4.73 meters.
Junior Celine Delice and freshman Danyelle Engles competed in the discus throw. Engels came in 11th place with a throw of 34.79 meters. Junior Gianna D'Amato threw the javelin 38.18 meters earning a fourth place finish in the event.
The women's track and field team competes next in Virginia in the Colonial Relays at William and Mary on April 5-6.
