Women's Soccer Ends Non-Conference Schedule with a Draw vs. Cornell
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime draw with Cornell in New Britain on Sunday. The game is the final non-conference game of the season for the Blue Devils, who now post a record of 2-8-1.
Sophomore Ashley Cavanaugh recorded her first shutout of the season, totaling six saves.
Central will begin Northeast Conference play in one week on October 2nd when they play host to Mount St. Mary's.
The Blue Devils had a pair of chances to score in the first half, but shots from sophomore Charlotte Maurer and junior Danielle Pearse, both from 18 yards out, wee stopped by the Cornell goalkeeper. Cavanaugh and the Blue Devil defense did a solid job of keeping Cornell off the scoreboard after a first half where they posted six shots.
The teams combined for nine first half shots, but neither could find the back of the net.
Both teams had four corner kicks in the second half but neither could convert those kicks into a goal.
After a quiet first overtime Cornell had a pair of scoring attempts in the second overtime but the game remained scoreless. One scoring attempt resulted in the ball hitting the cross bar. The second and final attempt came in the final seconds on a corner kick but the ball was kicked away by the CCSU defense to preserve the 0-0 draw.
The Blue Devils will open NEC play next Sunday, Oct. 2, hosting Mount St. Mary's beginning at 1 p.m. The game can be seen live on NECFrontRow.com.
