Women's Soccer Earns First Win Against Riverhawks
Blue Devils will return home against Colgate on Sunday.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team earned their first win of the season on Thursday night defeating UMass Lowell, 1-0, at Cushing Field in Lowell, MA. Junior Jennifer Cafferky scored the game-winner just before halftime.
Central improves to 1-6-0 and UMass Lowell falls to 2-2-2 on the season.
The Blue Devils and Riverhawks were neck-and-neck through the first 45 minutes of play, with Central talling five shots and the Riverhawks getting off four shots.
The Blue Devils broke the deadlock in the closing seconds of the first period when Cafferky headed in the only goal of the night off of a corner kick from junior Kelly Halligan to make it 1-0 at the 44:53 mark.
UMass Lowell's offense tried to spark a comeback in the second half, getting off seven shots compared to Central's three. CCSU's defense held steady against the Riverhawks' attack and senior Nicki Turley made a total of three saves to seal the victory and pick up her first shutout of the season.
The Blue Devils had a 4-3 edge in shots on goal and a commanding margin of 6-2 in corner kicks.
Centrall will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Colgate on Sunday, September 11, at 3 p.m. at CCSU Soccer Field.
