Women's Soccer Slowed by Providence, 3-1, on Thursday
Bornstein notches first career goal as a Blue Devil
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team was stopped by Providence, 3-1, on Thursday night at CCSU Soccer Field. The Blue Devils had a two-game win streak snapped and are now 2-7 on the season. Central is home against Brown at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The contest was the second straight at home for CCSU, which is in the midst of a six-game home stretch. The Blue Devils will play two more non-conference home games in the stretch before opening Northeast Conference play with back-to-back home games.
All of the goals came in the opening period. PC opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Rachel Ugolik fed Kathryn Hiller who put home her shot for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils tied the game two minutes later when freshman Anya Bornstein beat the Friars goalkeeper to the ball off a long kick and directed it home to make it 1-1. It was Bornstein's first career goal.
Providence regained the lead with 15 minutes left in the first half on a goal from Jill Clapp at the 30:22 mark to make it 2-1 before Casey Estey added an insurance goal. She held off the CCSU defense to get off a shot inside the 18-yard box with 2:09 to go in the first half. Her shot settled into the right side of the net to make it 3-1.
The Friars held a slim, 12-11, advantage in shots. Senior Nicki Turley made five saves for the Blue Devils who had posted back-to-back shutouts entering the game.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Sunday, September 18, when they host Brown. The kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will follow the CCSU men's soccer game that begins at noon.
