Maine Tops Women's Soccer 2-1 in Home Opener on Sunday
Blue Devils back in action this weekend on the road at Vermont
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 2-1 loss in its home opener on Sunday afternoon in New Britain. The Blue Devils, who fell 1-0 in overtime at St. John's on Friday night, are now off until Friday night when they travel to Vermont for the TD Bank Classic.
Maine struck first just 2:52 into the game when Kendra Ridley scored the game's first goal to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. Ridley fired from just outside the box and beat Central senior goalkeeper Nicki Turley for the early lead.
Junior Laura Casanovas Diaz evened the score at the 12:47 mark with her first goal of the season and the first of the year for the Blue Devils. Freshman Emily Hogan dribbled the ball down the left side of the box and found Casanovas Diaz with the pass, and the junior beat Maine keeper Annalena Kriebisch.
The visitors took the lead off a corner kick with 30:19 on the clock in the second half. The lead moved to 2-1 when Theresa Gosch took a pass from Kaitlyn Corral and beat Turley to the lower left side of the net.
Turley finished the game with a pair of saves. Maine's Kriebisch had four to pick up her second victory of the season. Maine is now 2-0.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday on the road at Vermont when they'll play in the TD Bank Classic. They'll play Vermont on Friday at 7 p.m. and then face New Hampshire on Sunday at 11 a.m.
