#18 Huskies Top Women's Soccer 2-1 at Morrone Stadium
Blue Devils travel to UMass Lowell on Thursday.
On Sunday afternoon, the 18th-ranked University of Connecticut Huskies held off the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in a women's soccer match in Storrs, CT. The Blue Devils will look to earn their first win of the season on Thursday, September 8, when they travel to UMass Lowell for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
The Huskies were the first to strike early at the 5:13 mark in the first period when Rachel Hill fired a goal past Central senior Nicki Turley. The Blue Devils' defensive efforts were strong enough to limit the Huskies one goal on 11 shots and six corner kick opportunities before the half.
Connecticut extended the lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute of play when Stephanie Ribeiro tapped in a chip shot from 18 yards out.
Central's offense emerged when sophomore Charlotte Maurer from Northhampton, MA scored on a solo shot past Connecticut goalie, Emily Armstrong at 83:40.
Soon after, senior Kristine Kelly had a corner kick for the Blue Devils with an opportunity to tie the score. However, the late offensive surge from the Blue Devils could not find the tying goal.
CCSU slipped to 0-6 on the year and UConn improved to 6-1.
Turley started and made six saves for CCSU in the first half. Sophomore Ashley Cavanaugh played the second half and made three stops.
CCSU takes on the UMass Lowell Riverhawks at Cushing Field on Thursday.
