Winning Streak at 10; Volleyball Sweeps FDU
The Central Connecticut volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 matches with Sunday's victory.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned a three set sweep of Fairliegh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils (19-7, 10-2 NEC) have now won 10 straight matches. CCSU earned 25-13, 25-17 and 25-17 victories to defeat the Knights (4-23, 2-10 NEC) in three sets.
In addition to winning 10 straight, the Blue Devils have won 17 of their last 19 contests. CCSU did not lose a match in the month of October.
The Blue Devils hit .396 as a team in the match, including a pair of sets in which they hit over .480 as a unit. Junior Rachel Dunlap led the way with a .727 hitting percentage. She connected for eight kills on 11 total attacks without an error. Senior Veronika Ban was also excellent in the contest with eight kills on 12 attacks for a .667 mark. Ban also did not have an attack error on the day.
Sophomore Heather Trueman led the squad in kills with 12, while freshmen Cassidy Stankowski (9) and Brooke Schwab (8) also had strong games on the attack.
Defensively, the Blue Devils posted 12.0 blocks and 45 digs in the match.
Dunlap contributed to six blocks and sophomore Makenna Lommori and Schwab each assisted on four. Stankowski and Ban each recorded a solo block in the match.
Senior Amalia Ashley recorded a match-high 15 digs out of the libero position. Junior Brittany Schumacher also reached double-digits and finished with 10 digs.
Lommori finished the match with 43 assists.
The Blue Devils 10 match winning streak is the longest since the 2004 squad won 15 straight.
The Blue Devils will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 16, against LIU Brooklyn. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Detrick Gym and will feature the first and second place squads in the Northeast Conference standings.
