Volleyball Tops Holy Cross in Four Sets
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned a four set victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday night.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned a four set victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday night. The victory gives the Blue Devils a 9-5 record in non-conference matches this season. Holy Cross falls to 6-7 with the loss.
The victory extends CCSU's winning streak to seven straight matches. The winning streak is the longest for CCSU since the 2007 season.
The Blue Devils started the first set quickly and built leads of 7-1, 9-4 and 16-9. Holy Cross was able to close the gap late in the set, but CCSU held on for the 25-22 victory. Sophomore Heather Trueman recorded the final point of the set on a kill.
In the second set, the Blue Devils trailed the Crusaders 6-2, but rallied and took the lead for good at 16-15. CCSU held the lead for the rest of the set and eventually pulled away for a 25-20 victory.
Holy Cross earned a 25-21 victory in the third set. The Blue Devils were unable to overcome an early deficit, but did play well later in the game.
The Blue Devils captured the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.
CCSU was led by sophomore Heather Trueman's 14 kills. Junior Rachel Dunlap posted 11 kills to also finish in double-digits. Senior Veronika Ban and freshman Cassidy Stankowski also had strong matches and each finished with nine kills.
Stankowski's .292 hitting percentage was the highest among CCSU players with over 20 total attacks in the match.
Freshman Brooke Schwab led the net defense with a pair of solo blocks. She also contributed five block assists. Dunlap, Trueman and sophomore Makenna Lommori each posted three block assists.
Lommori finished with 38 assists. She also had 10 digs, joining Stankowski (11) in double-digits.
The Blue Devils are now finished with the non-conference portion of their season. They will begin conference play at St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn this weekend.
