Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight Match
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned a a four set victory over Bryant on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned a four set victory over Bryant on Saturday. The win over the Bulldogs (8-21, 3-7 NEC) was their eighth consecutive victory. The Blue Devils (17-7, 8-2 NEC) have now won 15 of their last 17 matches and are a perfect 8-0 at Detrick Gym this season.
The eight match winning streak is the longest since the 2005 season when head coach Linda Sagnelli's squad won nine consecutive contests without losing a set.
Sophomore Heather Trueman posted a career-high 20 kills to lead all players. She connected on 20-of-42 attacks with just two attack errors to post a .429 hitting percentage in the match.
The Blue Devils won the opening set 25-10 and dropped the second set 25-21. CCSU closed out the match with set victories of 25-9 and 25-17.
Freshman Cassidy Stankowski (8), senior Veronika Ban (7), junior Rachel Dunlap (6), sophomore Makenna Lommoric (6), freshman Nicole Dean (3) and junior Brittany Schumacher (1) all contributed kills in the match.
Dunlap led the CCSU defense with six block assists. She contributed to six of CCSU's eight blocks as a team. Ban (3), Trueman (2), Stankowski (2), Lommori (1) and Dean (1) were also active at the net on defense.
Stankowski recorded a match-high 15 digs. She was joined in double-digits by freshman Rachel Dean (10). Lommori (7), Schumacher (4), and senior Amaila Ashley (4) also posted multiple digs for the Blue Devils in the victory.
The Blue Devils hit .287 as a team led by Trueman's .429 mark, but Ban (.385) and Dunlap (.333) also delivered accurate hitting throughout the match.
The Blue Devils can match the 2005 squad's nine-match winning streak with a victory on Saturday at Sacred Heart. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
