Volleyball Tops San Jose State; Falls to Sac State on Saturday
Central picks up its second win of the season vs. San Jose St.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team picked up its second win of the season and now stands 2-4 overall after a 3-0 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night. The match was the final match for CCSU in the Sacramento State Invitational this weekend.
Earlier on Saturday the Blue Devils dropped a 3-1 match to the host Hornets of Sac State.
In Saturday night's win over San Jose State sophomore Heather Trueman led a solid offensive attack for the Blue Devils with a match-high 14 kills and only three errors, hitting .289 in the victory. Freshman Cassidy Stankowski hit .348 with 10 kills and just a pair of errors.
Central won the first set 31-29, the second 27-25 before pulling away 25-16 in the third and final frame.
Freshman Brooke Schwab had eight kills and hit .467, helping the Blue Devils hit .308 for the match after notching just 11 errors and 44 kills.
Sophomore Makenna Lommori had 35 assists in the three-set win. Freshman Rachel Fish had a team-high 10 digs. Senior Amalia Ashley added nine digs and Trueman had eight to go along with two solo blocks and six block assists.
In the 3-1 loss to Sac State in the opener on Saturday Trueman had 13 kills. Sacramento State won the first set 25-22, but the Blue Devils responded with a 25-23 win in set two. The Hornets bounced back to win set three 25-9, followed by a 25-20 score in set three.
Lommori led the offense for the Blue Devils with 37 assists, she also added five kills. Schwab had 10 kills and a block. Senior Veronika Ban added seven kills and four digs.
The Blue Devils will travel to Dartmouth to play in the Dartmouth Big Green Invite next weekend. The following weekend Central will host its annual CCSU Blue Devil Invitational.
