Mullen Shines at CSGA's Palmer Cup
Rising senior Monte Mullen held a share of the 54-hole lead, but was edged on the fourth playoff hole.
Central Connecticut's Monte Mullen finished tied for second at the Palmer Cup on Wednesday. Mullen was part of a three-way tie for the lead that forced a playoff at the completion of the 54-hole event. Blake Morris finally broke the tie and captured the win with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole, topping Mullen and John Flaherty.
The Russell C. Palmer Cup, run by the Connecticut State Golf Association, is a 54-hole stroke play competition played at the Country Club of Waterbury. The event is named for former Executive Director of the CSGA and Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame Member Russell C. Palmer.
Connecticut's top amateur golfers vied for the state's amateur stroke play title on the par-69 Donald Ross layout that was set up to play at a total of 6,558 yards for the competitors. The course was originally founded in 1899.
Mullen was near the top of the leader boarder throughout the two-day event. He posted an opening round even par score of 69, but slipped to a 73 in the second round. However, he fired his second 69 of the event in the final round to close the 54 holes at four-over with 211 total strokes.
CCSU's Jack Ayers also competed in the event and was one of 39 players to make the cut. Ayers posted rounds of 73/77/78 to finish in a tie for 24th. He totaled 228 strokes and was 21 over per for the three rounds.
Mullen will be a senior for the Blue Devils in the fall and Ayers will be a junior.
