Men's Golf Wins Peacock Invitational
The Central Connecticut men's golf team won the St. Peter's Peacock Invitational on Tuesday.
The Central Connecticut men's golf team won the St. Peter's Peacock Metro Honda Invitational on Tuesday. The Blue Devils shot a 293 to earn a one-stroke victory over Northeast Conference rival Fairleigh Dickinson. Freshman Matt Hills claimed the individual honors by shooting a 70 on the 7,069-yard, par -72, Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
Hills posted a 35 on the front nine and then a matching 35 on the back nine to finish the day with the two-under 70. He was joined under par by classmate Nick Direda who shot 36-35 to finish with a 71.
Hills and Direda were the only players to shoot under pair in the single-round event.
"I am really excited about our performance this year with two wins," head coach Kevin Giancola said after the event. "With four top-five finishes this spring, I feel like we are peaking at the right time heading into the NEC Championship."
Junior Monte Mullen shot a 37-39 to finish with a 76. Freshman Bryant Bolden also posted a 76 with a 39-37 split. Both players were part of a six-way tie for 19th overall.
Senior Matthew DeJohn rounded out the Blue Devils squad. He posted a 79 on the day with a 41-38 split. DeJohn finished tied for 29th.
The victory is the second of the season for the Blue Devils and Hills. CCSU also won the New England Championship in the fall. Hills other win came in the shootout at River Landing last month.
Behind the Blue Devils at 293 strokes were Fairleigh Dickinson 294, Rider University 297, Monmouth University 305, Fairfield University 309, Saint Peter's 310 and St. Francis Brooklyn 326.
