Men's Golf Finishes 8th at Tiger Turning Stone Intercollegiate
The Central Connecticut men's golf team finished eighth at the Missouri Tiger Turning Stone Intercollegiate Invitational. The 54 hole event was held on the Kaluhyat Golf Course at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. The Blue Devils posted a team score of 305 for the third round to finish with a stroke total of 887 (283/299/305) on the par-72 course. As a team, CCSU was 23 strokes over par for the tournament.
Freshman Nick Direda led the Blue Devils with a 221 (70/72/79) for the tournament. His third round score of 79 did not factor into CCSU's team score, but Direda still finished tied for 23rd in the individual competition.
Senior Matthew DeJohn bounced back from a difficult second round to post a team-low 71 in Monday's third round. DeJohn's total score of 222 (72/79/71) earned him a share of 27th place in the final standings.
Junior Monte Mullen and sophomore Matt Hills both shot a 223 for the tournament to finish tied for 30th place. Mullen posted round scores of 74, 71 and 78. Hills posted CCSU's best round of the tournament a 67 in Sunday's first round. He shot 78 in both the second and third rounds.
Sophomore Connor Murphy posted a total score of 235 (79/78/78) and finished tied for 54th.
Missouri captured the team championship with a final score of 842 strokes, a total that sits 22 shots under par. The Tigers were the only team under par for the tournament.
Cleveland State, McNeese State, Binghamton and Connecticut captured places 2-5 in the team standings. Loyola-Chicago and Detroit finsihed just ahead of the Blue Devils. George Mason, LaSalle, Seton Hall, St. Peter's, Canisius and Villanova filled out the bottom of the field.
Andrew Bailey of Cleveland State took home individual honors with and impressive score of 207. Bailey posted rounds of 66, 70 and 71 to finish under par in each round and for the tournament.
Missouri's Ryan Zech and Emilio Cuartero finished second and third, respectively.
CCSU's Bryant Boulden, playing as an individual, finished tied for 65th. He posted a total score of 241 (76, 86, 79) and finished 25 strokes over par.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday, September 8, for the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational. The Blue Devils will host the tournament at Wintonbury Hills Golf Club in Bloomfield, CT.
