Friedmann Defends 500 Free Title; Goldman Takes Gold in 1-Meter
CCSU still holds strong at second after day two of the NEC Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team completed day two of the 2013 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday in second place. Senior Taylor Friedmann defended her title in the 500 yard freestyle event, touching the wall in 4:51.00. The Blue Devils also earned a win from the 1-meter diving board with a score of 228.75 from freshman Jessica Goldman.
Friedmann holds the current NEC record with 4:50.57, today's performance was just shy of that mark. Friedmann was followed by Bryant's Taylor DeBever in second and Blue Devil senior Allison Rasile, who helped earn a win in the 800 yard freestyle relay yesterday with a final lap push, took the bronze with a time of 4:55.69.

The Blue Devils also secured a first-third finish in the 1-meter diving event. Freshman Shawna Herter took third behind classmate Goldman. She earned a score of 197.00. Between the two was Wagner's Mallory Lee who took silver with a score of 223.00. Central sophomore Kate Dwyer took fifth in the event with a score of 191.50.

In the 200 yard IM, Saint Francis (PA) took both the gold and silver spots while Wagner grabbed third. Central senior Katie Lang came in sixth in the event, touching the wall in 2:07.58, earning a new season-best time.
Bryant's Casey Ostrander claimed the title in the 50 yard freestyle, followed by a pair from Saint Francis in second and third. Blue Devil junior Helene Neuhaus took sixth in the race with a season-best time of 23.91.
Central took fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay, swimming a 1:36.07. The team of Friedmann, Neuhaus, Rasile and junior Erin Massey, was topped by Bryant who paced the race and touched the wall first in 1:34.22.
