Swimming & Diving Sweeps on Saturday
CCSU topped Saint Francis (PA) and Duquesne in the third annual "Think Pink" Meet on Saturday in New Britain, CT.
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team topped Saint Francis (PA) by a score of 138-124 and Duquesne, 153.50-108.50, on Saturday in the third annual "Think Pink" Meet at the Jack Suydam Natatorium in New Britain, CT. The teams raised over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society and the Blue Devils took first place in nine out of 16 events to lead CCSU to the win.
Senior Allison Rasile earned Central's first victory of the day in the 200 yard freestyle. She finished in 1:56.06, two seconds faster than the nearest competition. Rasile was followed closely by junior Erin Massey who finished third, senior Katie Lang (fourth) and sophomore Karen Novak (fifth). Rasile also placed first in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.94.
Junior Helene Neuhaus clinched a victory in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.80. She also finished second in the 100 yard freestyle (53.71) and third in the 50 yard freestyle (24.83).
Junior Kristina Gulia completed the meet with a pair of first-place finishes. She took the gold in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:07.35, and also in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing the event in 2:24.03.
Senior Taylor Friedmann also earned a top spot for the Blue Devils in the 500 yard freestyle, completing the event in 5:07.06. She achieved two other top-three finishes in the meet: second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:28.38) and third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:13.35). Junior Kasey Chilton came in just behind Friedmann in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:10.76 for second and also in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:29.53) for third.
In team relays, Central earned the top spot in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team finished in 3:34.62 and consisted of Rasile, Neuhaus, Massey and Friedmann. CCSU also placed third in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.03. Senior Hannah Packer, junior Kellen Power, freshman Julie Hansen and Gulia made up the team.
Other notable performances for the Blue Devils were top-five finishes by Lang (second, 200 IM, 2:12.32 and fourth, 100 free, 54.83), Massey (fifth, 50 free, 25.77), Gulia (fourth, 200 IM, 2:14.76) and seniors Christine Smith (fourth, 200 breast, 2:33.81) and Lauren O'Kelly (fifth, 200 IM, 2:16.08.
Central are set to compete again on Friday, Nov. 2 in Smithfield, RI against the Bryant Bulldogs and the New Hampshire Wildcats. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
