Blue Devils Fall to RMU, 60-40 Monday
CCSU faces Wagner on Saturday, Feb.16.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Robert Morris 60-40 on Monday night in Moon Township, PA. Sophomore Ashley Berube recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Central Connecticut falls to 6-15 overall and 3-8 in NEC, while Robert Morris improves to 14-8 and 11-0 in league.
Central got off to an early 11-5 lead connecting on its first 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) shots. Sophomore Emma McCamus provided a spark off the bench completing an old fashion three-point play to give the Blue Devils a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. CCSU started sharp defensively recording two steals and forcing four turnovers in the quarter.
CCSU opened the second quarter shooting 2-7 from the floor with back to back makes by Berube. The Colonials went on a 7-0 run and took a 23-20 lead. The Blue Devils went scoreless for 5:33 before senior Andi Lydon found classmate Sydney Hines for a breakaway layup to end the RMU run. Robert Morris outscored Central 14-6 and had a 25-22 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.
At the halftime break, CCSU shot 9-for-28 (32.1 percent) and RMU shot 11-for-29 (37.9 percent) from the field. The teams tied in rebounds at 18 each and both had seven turnovers. Berube was 3-7 (42.8 percent) from the floor with eight points.
Robert Morris heated up in the second half opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run, pushing the lead to 13. McCamus pushed in transition hitting junior Ashley Chin for a wide-open jumper to give Central its first basket of the quarter with 5:47 on the clock.
The Colonials shot 50.0 percent (9-18) in third and entered the fourth quarter with a 45-31 lead. Central had three steals after applying full court pressure in the last 10 minutes of play. Two free throws by Natalie Villaflor put RMU's up 56-35 with 3:29 to play and they would go onto win the game.
Eight players scored for the Blue Devils with 14 points coming from the bench. The team shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line.
Two players hit double-figures for the Colonials. Nneka Ezeigo posted 15 points and seven rebounds and Honoka Ikematsu had 14 points.
Women's basketball is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Wagner. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
