Women’s Basketball Tops LIU Brooklyn 63-57 Monday
CCSU hosts Bryant Saturday, Feb. 2 for alumni day.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team outscored LIU Brooklyn 63-57 Monday night inside Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, CT. Senior co-captains Andi Lydon and Kiana Patterson combined for 34 points.
The Blue Devils opened the game shooting an impressive 8-16 (50.0 percent) from the floor and 4-8 (50.0 percent) from three-point range. Lydon and Patterson combined for the first 11 points for Central. CCSU went on a 10-0 run holding LIU scoreless for 4:03 and led 21-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The game slowed down after the first 10 minutes as Central scored just nine points in the second quarter. Sophomore Ashley Forker ran down a Blackbird and blocked her shot from behind to stop an easy transition layup. LIU went on a 7-1 run to cut the lead 27-23 with 2:09 to play.
At the half, the Blue Devils led 30-24. The team shot 11-31 (35.5 percent) and 4-11 (36.4 percent) from three. Central held LIU Brooklyn to 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from the field, 1-6 (16.7 percent) from deep, and forced 12 turnovers.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half before LIU knocked down back-to-back jumpers. Patterson sank a three-pointer right in front of Central's bench to end the run. The Blackbirds got within two points with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. CCSU closed the quarter on a 7-2 run.
The Blue Devils went into the fourth up 48-41. LIU went on a 9-2 run and a jumper by Brandy Thomas tied the game 53-53 with 4:06 to play. The scored stayed the same for almost three minutes and the Blue Devils converted 12-16 (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Patterson recorded her sixth 20+ point game with 24 points and three assists. Lydon finished with 13 points and six rebounds. McCamus also finished with double-figures with 12 points.
LIU Brooklyn had three players hit double-digits. Brandy Thomas and Jeydah Johnson each scored 15 points and Tia Montagne ended with 12 points.
The Blue Devils are home on Saturday, Feb. 2 for alumni day against Bryant. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by the men's team at 3:30 p.m.
