Blue Devils Drop 70-58 Decision to the Terriers
Women's basketball hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team closed its four-game road series at St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday afternoon. The Blue Devils fell 70-58 in Brooklyn Heights dropping to 6-17 overall and 3-10 in conference. St. Francis Brooklyn improves to 15-10 and 9-4 in league.
Sophomores Emma McCamus and Tiffany Slicklein provided a spark off the bench combining for 13 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
The Terriers opened the game pushing the ball in transition taking an early 6-0 lead. Central went scoreless for the first four minutes shooting 0-7 before junior Bruna Vila Artigues stole the ball and found senior Kiana Patterson up the court to get the Blue Devils on the board.
With four seconds on the clock, Slicklein stole the ball in the back court and finished the play with a layup to put the Blue Devils down three at the end of the first quarter.
Central was on a 6-0 run for 4:02 before Amy O'Neill drilled a three pointer for the Terriers. Artigues hit a three of her own just before the shot clock expired and the Blue Devils went into the locker room down 35-27 at halftime.
At the half, CCSU shot 9-29 (.310) and 7-9 (.778) from the foul line. The team also had four blocks and four assists. St. Francis Brooklyn was 14-31 (.452) from the floor, had 24 rebounds and 10 assists.
Sophomore Ashley Berube kept Central alive in the third quarter. The center scored eight of the 11 third quarter points shooting 4-of-5 from the floor. Central held St. Francis scoreless for 3:30 before the Terriers went on a 16-4 run to push the lead to 15.
Going into the final 10 minutes of play, CCSU trailed 53-38. Berube hit back to back shots to cut into the St. Francis lead but Jade Johnson scored eight straight points for the Terriers to keep the lead at double-digits.
The Blue Devils won the quarter 20-17 and shot 53.3 percent, but St. Francis would go onto win the game. Patterson and Berube combined for 15 of the 20 fourth quarter points.
Berube totaled 14 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. Patterson finished with 16 points in the game. McCamus had a career-high nine rebounds, just one short of a double-double.
Johnson finished with 21 points and six rebounds for the Terriers. Aria Palarino was the only other player to hit double-digits for St. Francis with 18 points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Women's basketball is back in New Britain on Saturday, Feb. 23 for a double-header against Sacred Heart. The women tip off at 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 3:30 p.m.
