Women’s Basketball Records Season-High 11 Steals, Earns First Home win Over UNH 56-47
CCSU travels to Yale on Thursday, Dec. 20.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated New Hampshire 56-47 for its first win inside Detrick Gymnasium on Sunday, Dec. 16. The Blue Devils recorded a season-high 11 steals and senior Kiana Patterson led the team with 19 points.
Central improves to 3-5, while New Hampshire falls to 3-8.
Patterson opened the game for Central sinking a three-pointer from the wing. The Blue Devils started strong defensively holding New Hampshire to just 16.2 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes of play. CCSU ended the first quarter with a slight 15-8 lead, with six points coming from the bench.
For the rest of the half, the Wildcats used their size advantage in the paint outrebounding the Blue Devils 13-7. Forwards Ashley Storey and Maggie Ahern combined for 15 of New Hampshire's 21 first half points. Central entered halftime up 25-21.
At the half, CCSU shot 10-22 (.445) from the floor and held UNH to 7-29 (.241).
Out of the halftime gate, Central continued to apply defensive pressure forcing five turnovers and three steals in the third. After taking her second charge of the game, sophomore Emma McCamus intercepted a pass and found junior Ashley Chin running the floor for an easy transition layup.
CCSU led the entire game going into the fourth. After a deep three-pointer by the Wildcats, Patterson responded with a three of her own from the corner to extend the lead to 8 with six minutes to play. Storey kept the Wildcats in the game scoring nine of the teams 10 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Andi Lydon got fouled making a layup at the 2:12 mark putting Central pushing the led back to six. The Blue Devils went on to win the game 56-47.
McCamus played well on both sides of the ball and was the only other Blue Devil to hit double-figures with 13 points. She finished with two steals and two charges. Classmate Ashley Forker scored a season-high eight points and grabbed three rebounds and made one steal.
Storley led the Wildcats with 23 points and seven rebounds. Ivy Gogolin also had seven rebounds and Amanda Torres recorded three steals.
The Blue Devils close their non-conference slate against two in-state opponents. The team travels to Yale on Thursday, Dec. 20 at noon and hosts Hartford on Friday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
