McCamus Scores Career-High, Central Drops to Bulldogs 72-60, Saturday
Central hosts LIU Brooklyn Monday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team dropped a 72-60 decision to Bryant on Saturday, Jan. 26 inside Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield, RI. Sophomore Emma McCamus led the Blue Devils with a career-high 19 points.
Both teams opened the game missing its first few attempts at the rim. After missing its first five shots, sophomore Ashely Berube connected on back to back baskets to put Central on the board. Bryant went on a 11-2 run in the quarter holding the Blue Devils scoreless for over two minutes. Baskets by senior Kiana Patterson and McCamus kept CCSU in the game, but the Blue Devils trailed 25-12 at the end of the first.
McCamus scored the first five points for Central in the second quarter. Bryant responded with baskets by Sydney Holloway and Hannah Scanlon. Senior Andi Lydon hit back to back free throws followed by a three from the top of the key to cut into the lead 33-22 with 4:07 left in the second. Central went on a 6-0 run before Kierra Palmer knocked down a three with under 10 seconds to give the Bulldogs a 38-28 halftime lead. Central outscored Bryant 16-13 in the second quarter shooting 50 percent (2-4) from three.
After the first 20 minutes of play, CCSU shot 25.6 percent (10-39) from the floor including 25.0 percent (2-8) from three. The team also shot 85.7 percent from the foul line. Bryant shot 46.9 percent (15-31) and 28.6 percent (2-7) from deep
Central stopped Bryant on its first four possessions with the ball to start the second half. Patterson started to heat up scoring 10 of the 12 points in the quarter for the Blue Devils. CCSU trailed 52-40 with 10 minutes left to play.
The Blue Devils went on a 9-2 run to open the final quarter. A jumper by Patterson cut the lead to 54-49 with 6:43 to play. Central went on a final run with threes by Patterson and McCamus, but the Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run pushing the lead back to 14 points. The teams tied the fourth quarter 20-20 and the Blue Devils shot 70.0 percent (7-10) in the quarter.
Patterson was the only other player to hit double-digits for Central with 16 points, shooting 7-19 (36.8 percent) from the field.
Holloway led the Bulldogs with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Scanlan finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Masey Zegariwski recorded 10 points for Bryant.
Central Connecticut is back at home on Monday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. hosting LIU Brooklyn inside Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, CT.
