Lydon Records Season-High, Blue Devils Stopped at Wagner
CCSU faces St. Francis Brooklyn Monday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Wagner 70-62 on Saturday in Staten Island, NY. Senior Andi Lydon had a season-high 19 points along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. She connected on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) shooting including 3-4 (75.0 percent) from deep.
CCSU falls to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in conference, while Wagner improves to 9-14 and 7-5 in league play.
Central opened the game strong offensively connecting on its first 4-of-5 (80.0 percent) shots. The Seahawks made three pointers on three straight possessions to take a slight 13-11 lead at the first media timeout. Despite Wagner shooting 4-9 (44.4 percent) from deep in the quarter, the Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run in the last 3:55 to have a 20-18 lead at the end of the first.
By halftime, CCSU had six players on the board. The team continued to share the basketball having 11 assists on 15 made field goals. Sophomore Emma McCamus drove to the basket drawing two defenders and passed the ball to Lydon for an easy layup.
Wagner continued to show its ability to hit from range making 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) threes in the first half. Seniors Kiana Patterson and Lydon showed their range, each shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.
At the half, the Blue Devils led 41-34, the most points they have scored in the first half all season. Lydon and Patterson combined for 22 points and as a team CCSU shot 68.2 percent (15-22). Wagner shot 41.9 percent (13-31) and had 12 assists, with 16 of its 34 points coming from the bench.
The Seahawks opened the third quarter on a 11-2 run to take a two-point lead as Central shot just 1-6 in the opening minutes of the second half. Lydon hit her third triple of the day to tie the game 46-46 with 5:27 to play in the quarter. Lydon scored seven of the 11 third quarter points for the Blue Devils.
Going into the fourth, the game was tied 52-52. Wagner went on a 8-0 run to lead 60-52 at the last media timeout with 6:14 to play. Patterson ended the run with back to back threes to cut the lead to four.
With 1:43 to play, Wagner hit its 10th three pointer to push the lead back to seven and would go onto win the game 70-62.
Patterson was the only other player to hit double-digits for CCSU. She totaled 16 points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Wagner had four players hit double-digits and Khaleah Edwards led the team with 13 points. Jordan Hobson, Nakylia Carter, and Joellen How all had 11 points for the Seahawks.
Women's basketball ends its four-game road series at St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday, Feb. 18 in Brooklyn Heights, NY. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
