Trio of Blue Devils Honored by NEC on Friday
Piper Named Coach of the Year for the First Time
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team put together its most successful Northeast Conference regular season in team history in 2014-15, earning the top seed in the 2015 NEC Tournament. On Friday a trio of Blue Devils were recognized for their regular season, including head coach Beryl Piper who was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the first time.
Piper and the Blue Devils earned a regular season co-championship this season, finishing tied with Bryant University with a 14-4 league record and an 18-11 mark overall. The 14 wins in league play are the most in school history for the Blue Devils, and after winning the tie-breaker with the Bulldogs the Blue Devils earned the top seed in the upcoming tournament.
Freshman Camden Musgrave was named to the league's All-Rookie Team in her first season in New Britain and junior TeJahne Malone was named to the Second Team All-Conference squad.
Malone leads a balanced offensive attack for the Blue Devils this season averaging a team-high 11.1 points per game while shooting 54 percent from the field. She also averages a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. She more than doubled her scoring average from a year ago and has started 26 games this season, averaging 27.5 minutes per game. In conference action Malone is averaging 12.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in 18 games.
Musgrave wasted little time making an impact in her first season with the Blue Devils. She is second on the team at 9.2 points per game while sooting 37.2 percent from three-point range as a freshman. She has 12 double-figure scoring games this season including two at 20+. She scored a career-high 22 points in a home win over Wagner in January.
The Blue Devils will host #8 seed LIU Brooklyn on Sunday at 2 p.m. Fans can buy tickets online at CCSUTickets.com.
