The Central Connecticut women's basketball team (11-8, 7-1 NEC) travels to Staten Island, NY for a 1 p.m. Northeast Conference game at Wagner (4-15, 2-6) on Saturday afternoon. Central has won four in a row and sits in a tie for first place with Bryant University, each with a 7-1 Northeast Conference record. Today's game will be the first of a double header with the CCSU men's team taking on Wagner at 4 p.m.
Today's Game • The first place Blue Devils (11-8, 7-1 NEC) travel to Staten Island for a NEC matchup with the Wagner Seahawks (4-15, 2-6 NEC) in the Spiro Sports Center at 1 p.m. on the campus of Wagner College. This is the ninth Northeast Conference contest for both the Blue Devils and Seahawks as both teams enter week 5 of conference play.
Series History • The Blue Devils hold a comanding lead in the all-time Division I series history, 22-14, including a 77-61 victory exactly one week earlier this season in New Britain. With the victory, CCSU is now 11-2 against Wagner while under the direction of head coach Beryl Piper, including a perfect 6-0 record against the Seahawks in the Spiro Sports Center.
Earlier This Season • This is the second meeting this season between the Blue Devils and Seahawks. The two teams met exactly one week ago on Jan. 24 in Detrick Gym and the Blue Devils prevailed 77-61. CCSU was led by freshman Camden Musgrave who netted a career-high 22 points in the win. Wagner was led by sophomore Jasmine Nwajei who recorded a game-high 23 points.
Last Year's Meetings • The Blue Devils and Seahawks split a pair of meetings with each other last season with both teams picking up wins on opposing courts. CCSU defeated Wagner 80-71 on Jan. 11 in Staten Island before the Seahawks got revenge in New Britain with a 75-63 victory of their own on Feb. 24.
Scouting Wagner • Wagner enters today's matchup with a 4-15 overall record and 2-6 mark in NEC play. They are coming off an 87-74 loss to Saint Francis U at home last Monday, Jan. 24. Wagner was led by sophomore guard Jasmine Nwajei who finished the game with 34 points, three assists and five steals. The next highest scorer for Wagner in the game was Lyndsay Rowe who finished with 13. Nwajei is responsible for most of the offensive output for Wagner averaging 23.4 ppg. She also is the leading rebounder for the Seahawks entering today's game with 117 rebounds on the year. Jordyn Peck is Wagner's second threat averaging 13.9 ppg, while connecting on 39-of-137 three point attempts.
Last Time Out • Central edged St. Francis Brooklyn 51-49 last Monday night to improve its NEC record to 7-1 and remain tied for first place with the Bryant Bulldogs. The back-and-forth affair saw SFBK have a last second chance to tie the game, but it rimmed out and the Blue Devils escaped with the win. The score was tied five different times and changed hands on 14 occasions. CCSU was led by freshman Camden Musgrave who logged a game-high 12 points and connected on three-of-four free throw attempts in the final 1:03 of play to secure the victory for Central.
NEC Rookie of the Week • Freshman Camden Musgrave was named NEC Rookie of the Week by the Northeast Conference on Tuesday afternoon after recording a career-high 22 points against Wagner last Saturday and a game-high 12 points at SFBK on Monday. Musgrave was the top rookie scorer in the NEC last week and she was sensational shooting the basketball from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. She paced the Blue Devils averaging 17.0 points per contest in just 25 minutes per game off the bench for Central. The freshman guard connected on 53.8 percent (9-17) of her attempts from three and converted at a 81.8 percent (9-11) clip from the free throw line, helping CCSU run its NEC win streak to four in a row.
CCSU at the Half • The Blue Devils led St. Francis Booklyn 27-21 at the half on Monday night. Central is now 10-2 on the season when leading at the half.
Blue Devil D • The Blue Devils limited St. Francis Brooklyn to just 37.5% shooting on Monday night. It was the 12th time this season Central has kept their opponents under 40% shooting from the floor. The Blue Devils are 11-1 in those games.
7-1 in NEC • The 7-1 mark in the NEC is the best start to league play through eight games in program history.
