Horgan and Ford Named Player And Rookie of The Week
Freshman goalkeeper Melina Ford was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week after earning a clean sheet and Junior forward Aoife Horgan was named Player of the Week with 3 goals in two games.
Aoife Horgan has put together a career season so far. Three goals and four points this week, earned her Player of the Week for the second time this year. She scored two crucial goals against Merrimack and another against Le Moyne, giving her team an early lead. In the 83rd minute, Horgan broke free for a goal to make it 2-0, then sealed the game with her second back-breaking goal two minutes later. She scored in the 10th minute in Sunday's match vs Le Moyne to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead which helped secure a tie. She's had an incredible season, ranked third in goals, fourth in assists, second in points, and first in game-winning goals in the Northeast Conference. Those are all career highs for Horgan.
Melina Ford has been a rock in goal. She did not let in a single goal this week, earning her a clean sheet against both conference opponents. Her two key saves in the second half against Le Moyne were crucial in preventing Central from suffering their first conference loss since 2021. In the Merrimack match, Ford made a game-changing save in the 83rd minute, which denied them from tying the game. Just 22 seconds later, Aoife Horgan capitalized on the momentum shift and scored. Melina is leading the Northeast Conference in goals against average and ranks third in save percentage. Central's defense has allowed only 14 goals and ranks 2nd as a team in goals allowed with 14 and goals-against average (.93).
The Blue Devils look to clinch the NEC title with two games left. They play Stonehill on Sunday, October 22nd at 2:00 PM and Wagner on Thursday at 4:00 PM October 26th for the women's soccer regular-season finale at CCSU Soccer Field.
